History

It isn’t surprising to hear that 4 guys from college came up with an idea to start a brewery. Which they did in 1999 called Coastal Extreme Brewing Company, now known as The Newport Storm Brewery. But then in 2006 after seven years of brewery beer the crew decided to embark on a new additional adventure. After learning about Newport, RI’s rum history, they started Newport Distilling Company to make Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum, utilizing much of the same equipment and bringing back this historic practice to the area. It was the first distillery back in Rhode Island in 135 years.

Perhaps the biggest event of all came on a stormy winter day in 2010 when Mike Rowe, host from Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” showed up at their door. Newport Distilling Company’s Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum was featured in  the episode “Rum Distiller”.  Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum is now nationally recognized!

Since 2006, the distillery has added other craft spirits such as Thomas Tew Widows Walk and Sea Fog AmeRIcan Whiskey . Thousands of people have visited the brewery and distillery and much more have had the opportunity to try our historic rum throughout the east coast and as far west as Michigan. Through it all, the focus continues to be making quality, unique, local craft spirits for our fans.

As in the beginning, they hope you enjoy their craft spirits as much as they enjoy making them.
